The TH Interview: Ray Anderson—The Man with a Spear in his Chest (Part One)
By TreeHugger Radio | July 4, 2008

Ray Anderson started his company, Interface, back in the 1970s to make carpet. Like any business man, he wanted to shake up the market and make a healthy profit, which he’s done, and Interface now has 17 manufacturing locations on four continents. But this is not business as usual. Not anymore. Since having a sustainability epiphany, as he calls it, Ray has starting steering Interface toward one hell of a goal: zero negative effects on the planetary ecosystem by the year 2020, a goal he admits no corporation has yet reached. TreeHugger has long found inspiration in Interface’s elegant design solutions—products like modular carpet and FLOR—and in Anderson’s own sagely words. ::TreeHugger Radio

- More Hip 3rd Anniversary Quiz Drawing Winner! Drum roll, please. . . . Molly from Baltimore! Congratulations Molly, and thanks to all who entered!
- Treehuggers unite! DateforTrees.com is on online dating service that hooks you up with like-minded people AND donates a tree to American Forests for each month you are a paid member of their service. You can sign up for free and see if it's right for you before upgrading to a paid membership.
- The results are in. Oprah has concluded her 21-day vegan cleansing process. During the 3 weeks, with the exception of olive oil, all the food she ate was grown in her garden.
- White House still withholding. The White House is drying to block the U.S. EPA from releasing a document that shows how the Clean Air Act could be used to regulate greenhouse gases.
- The Bush Legacy. A new initiative will ask San Francisco voters to change the name of a prize-winning water treatment plant to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant. Now that's what we call good, old fashioned bathroom humor!
Sticking with the topic of this episode, this week's Teenie Weenie Greenie™ is to try an Organic Beer (if you are of legal drinking age, of course). If you're too young to drink beer, or just don't like beer (gasp!) try an organic juice.

Listener EmailsOnce again, we have a bunch of great listener emails. Keep 'em rolling in at hip@greenfeet.com. And don't forget to post articles, links, and speak your mind at our MHTH forum!
- Locally Known. Sydney sent along an article about a company called Locally Known. It's a farm company in Maine with a goal of providing New England fresh greens.
- Composting made easy. Tyus is trying to convince his mom to start composting, but she's worried about not having enough space and the smell. If you have enough room outdoors, an Envirocycle Composter is great. For indoor composting and small spaces, try an odor-free automatic composter, like the NatureMill Plus or NatureMill Pro.
- Plant peril. Brian sent in a couple links about how global warming is affecting plants and how the Ozone is bad for plants. He also wanted everyone to check out Farm Fountains, sculptural ecosystems you can eat.
- Organic Brew Robert tried his first organic beer recently, Stone Mill pale ale.
- Hipster Welcome! We wanted to welcome new listener Rob, who discovered More Hip Than Hippie while on CleanMPG.com.
- Free fun in DC. Cassi is planning to take advantage of the free bike tours offered by the National Park Service on her next trip to Washington DC.
- Litter box solutions. Hilary has discovered a less wasteful option for her cat's litter box. She uses aquarium gravel with a sifting litter box. The idea is to pick up the sifter with the litter, pour the cat urine down the drain, put the poo in the trash, and then wash and rinse the aquarium gravel.
- Homemade freezer chocolate. Give Hilary's homemade freezer chocolate recipe a try:
- Heat 1 cup of coconut oil, Agave syrup till sweetened, and 1 cup of cacao powder.
- Chop 1 cup almonds and 1/2 cup candied ginger.
- Mix the almonds and ginger on some wax paper on a cookie sheet.
- Pour the chocolate mixture over it and make sure all of the almonds and ginger are coated.
- Freeze until hard, cut into bite sized pieces and store in the freezer.

Looking at The Big Moral Question
By peakmoment | June 30, 2008
Peak Moment 116: "What's going to happen to our kids?" When Bruce Anderson read "The Limits to Growth" in the 1970s, he learned that nothing in nature grows forever -- including the human economy. As we rapidly use everything up, we're now reaching those limits and entering a crisis of adaptation. He raises the moral, ethical and emotional aspects of a challenge humans have never faced before. He feels we're up against limitations of thought, of the heart, almost at a mythic level. He asks: Can we mature from our childish consumerist narcissism to compassionate adulthood? Will our inbuilt caring for our children propel us to quickly take action so they have a future? While facing what's before us, how can we keep our spirit and heart alive, not succumbing to denial or despair? [www.forthefuture.org]
