More Hip Than Hippie - Art to Die For
We love art Ã?? not that either one of us can paint, draw or heaven forbid, sculpt. But, we love to have fun anyway. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder correct? Plus, we have kids who are quite the artists and who doesnÃ??t love their childÃ??s art plastered all over the refrigerator and surrounding walls? We were astonished to find that many art supplies contain chemicals that can be harmful to those who use them. This show offers insight into alternatives to create beautiful and eco-friendly art.

Inside Renewable Energy - May 25, 2006

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Peterborough, NH. [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] With the price of oil and gas increasingly out of reach for the average consumer, the wood pellet industry has entered an unprecedented phase of expansion. But some have questioned wood pellets’ legitimacy as a truly renewable energy source. In the week’s edition of “Inside Renewable Energy,” Charlie Niebling of New England Wood Pellets makes the case for the company’s product, citing the benefits of carbon neutrality, localized economies and sustainable feedstock. Wood pellets are not emission-free, but they contribute far fewer greenhouse gases than oil, gas or coal, says Niebling. With more customers than ever, the pellet industry can no longer rely on a limitless supply of its primary source material, sawdust. The key to continual supply may turn out to be sustainable forestry, Niebling says.

In this week’s podcast, RewableEnergyAccess.com Editor Jesse Broehl weighs in on the most significant stories of the month. A new concentrated solar project in Arizona may signal the beginning of a new era for the technology, says Broehl, as Southwestern states find ways to comply with renewable portfolio standards and supply power to a growing population. Broehl also discusses the lack of federal support for solar in Canada and says there may be reasons for optimism regarding offshore wind power in the U.S., despite the struggles of the Cape Wind project.

This week’s “Inside Renewable Energy” offers the latest in renewable energy news.

More Hip Than Hippie Pocast #49 - Your Eco-Friendly Lawn!

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

We’re happy campers this week we’ve got beer sent in by hipsters Theresa & Michelle, yummy treats and we’re talking yards. That’s right, this week it’s all about yards - particularly lawns and how much we truly dislike them. We’ve got some alternatives and ideas how to keep the one you’ve got (if you just can’t part with it), happy and healthy without nasty chemicals.

Inside Renewable Energy - May 18, 2006

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

There has been extensive coverage of oil company profits recently, and equal coverage of skyrocketing prices at the pump. Less attention has been paid to specific proposals on how to redress the imbalance. In this week’s edition of “Inside Renewable Energy,” Julie Buckner of Californians For Clean Energy makes a case for the organization’s Clean Alternative Energy Initiative, which calls for an extraction tax of up to 6% on all crude oil produced in California. The tax revenue will be directed toward the further development of alternative fuels and alternative-fuel vehicles. California oil companies are calling the Initiative a punitive measure that panders to public sentiment.

Wind power has come a long way in recent years, especially in the U.S. Wind Power 2006, a trade show sponsored by the American Wind Energy Association, will reflect a rapidly evolving industry, says AWEA’s Steven Miner. The show, which will take place June 4-7 in Pittsburgh, PA, will be more multi-dimensional than ever, says Miner, and will include a strong international presence, new investors, and multiple presentations and exhibitions that address the supply side of the business.

This week’s “Inside Renewable Energy” also offers the latest in renewable energy news.

Inside Renewable Energy - May 11, 2006

Thursday, May 11th, 2006

Travis Bradford of the Cambridge, Mass. based Prometheus Institute informs “Inside Renewable Energy” this week that the much-feared silicon shortage will not have a major impact on the production of PV solar. Silicon-based technology is too entrenched for rapid conversion to other methods, and silicon is in better supply than previously thought, says Bradford. Conventional solar cell operations will continue to do brisk business despite ongoing attempts to market new low-silicon or silicon-free technologies, he says.

In the Tech Spotlight segment of this week’s podcast, David Muchow, CEO of Skybuilt Power, tells us why his Mobile Power Station addresses an overlooked area of energy needs. The MPS is a modular system than accommodates all forms of renewable technology and is designed to the customer’s specifications for use in remote areas. Muchow explains how the U.S. Army and any number of undeveloped countries could benefit from his company’s product.

As always, “Inside Renewable Energy” will deliver the latest renewable energy news.
