Inside Renewable Energy - June 29, 2006
Thursday, June 29th, 2006The energy problem is a people problem, says Benjamin Sovacool, and finding a solution means changing peoples’ conception of energy’s central role in society. In this week’s edition of “Inside Renewable Energy,” Sovacool, who was awarded a fellowship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory after defending his doctoral dissertation at Virginia Tech, tells us why his theories on distributed generation are relevant to the search for energy independence. The price at the pump is a small part of the true cost of fossil fuels, says Sovacool, and consumers must gain a fuller understanding of the consequences of their energy choices before renewable energy can compete with conventional sources.
This week’s podcast visits with RenewableEnergyAccess.com editor Jesse Broehl, who offers an update on recent stories concerning radar interference from wind turbines. There is talk that the recent bill that stopped wind turbines in the Midwest has its origins in the effort to block the Cape Wind project in Massachusetts, says Broehl, though proof of this point has not come to light. Broehl also reports on a proposed new solar project in California’s Bay Area that could set a new size record in the U.S.
This week’s “Inside Renewable Energy” offers the latest in renewable energy news.

Inside Renewable Energy - June 15, 2006
Thursday, June 15th, 2006Wind, solar, biofuels and other renewable technologies can be said to constitute a new energy market, but that doesn’t mean that new ways of doing business are in order. In this week’s “Inside Renewable Energy,” U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy Andy Karsner talks about the challenges of channeling the enormous flow of renewable energy capital toward the right projects. Karsner, whose career started off in conventional energy, brings a well-seasoned market sensibility to the office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, which he runs. The market forces that govern oil, gas and coal are object lessons in how best to promote the growth of renewables, says Karsner.
Energy Ocean 2006 is the third running of the event, and while ocean energy is as much in the background today as it was three years ago, progress in the U.S. is being made. In this week’s podcast, we’ll hear from Energy Ocean 2006 organizer Dan Weiss, who says we’ve got a lot to learn from the U.K. when it comes to generating power from the ocean. Distance between coastlines–and a corresponding lack of political motivation from state-centric senators and representatives–is a major impediment for ocean energy in the U.S., says Weiss.
This week’s edition of “Inside Renewable Energy” offers the latest in renewable energy news.

- Diana from Lawrence, Kansas sent us a link to Harper’s Magazine about calculating car insurance by the mile instead of a flat rate. We think this is an interesting approach. Love to hear your feedback.

- Emmie from Japan emailed us and suggested a cookbook called "Harumi’s Japanese Cooking" by Harumi Kurihara.
- Yippie Adam - a fellow podcaster (check out his show at www.yippieshow.com) sent us this highly disturbing article. Well, the article itself is not disturbing, but the fact that they suggest using waste chocolate to power your car is. Val nearly fainted when she read this.
- Kellie helped to update us on the state of the bag tax in bayside town of San Francisco (ding ding). Apparently, it’s going nowhere. The big bad bag lobbyists (who knew there were such folks) cut a deal with the city to decrease plastic bag consumption by 10 million - which is only 10 bags per person - or 1 large shopping trip. Trouble is, there doesn’t appear to be anything in place to help make that happen. So, continue to bring your trusty reusable bag, sign Big Ed’s pledge, and help spread the word.

He has a question as to what to use for trash under the sink. Check out BioBags from Greenfeet.com. They’re compostable, made from GMO free corn and are fairly strong. Val uses them all the time and Dori’s ticked she didn’t share that she had them. Now we all know.

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

Rebecca Carter from greenerMIAMI takes part in Transit Miami’s Summer Transit Challenge.
In this video, of her first week participating in the challenge, she rides the Metromover a few short stops from Brickell’s Finacial District Station to Eighth Street Station.
The MetroMover is a free people-mover service provided by Miami-Dade County.
During the ride there is no commentary. The camera was simply placed on the bench in the rear of the Mover to record the experience.
The video offers an interesting view of downtown Miami’s Brickell skyline and construction.

Inside Renewable Energy - June 8, 2006
Thursday, June 8th, 2006Meeting an ambitious Renewable Portfolio Standard is good for the environment and a positive step toward preserving the planet. It’s also good for business. On that basis, the state of Pennsylvania has passed an 18% RPS, to be achieved by 2020. In this week’s edition of “Inside Renewable Energy,” the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Environmental Protection Agency, Kathleen McGinty, tells us why statewide development of renewable energy and renewable energy businesses will provide a lasting economic boost for the state. The environmental benefits and advantages of energy independence are highly desirable, says McGinty, but the job creation and foreign investment that comes with the state’s commitment to renewable energy are reason enough to set and meet the RPS, In this week’s podcast, we’ll hear from RE Insider Scott Sklar, whose Q&A column has covered an extensive range of renewable energy questions. Sklar analyzes the results of some recent poles to ascertain the general American attitude toward renewable energy. The majority of Americans want to see the country transition to cleaner, more sustainable power, says Sklar, but there is division on how best to reach that goal. More than ever, energy issues are an integral part of U.S. politics, says Sklar. As always, this week’s “Inside Renewable Energy” brings you the latest in renewable energy news.
