Inside Renewable Energy - July 27, 2006

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

The home-based renewable energy movement has matured dramatically in recent years. Once a tiny segment of the energy mix with counterculture associations, it has become a serious player in the industry. Home Power magazine — with its hands-on editorial approach to products, systems and trends — has chronicled self-sustaining households for the past 20 years. In this week’s edition of “Inside Renewable Energy,” we’ll talk with Home Power CEO and Technical Editor Joe Schwartz about the magazine’s changing readership and about a new and widespread appreciation for home-based systems.

Bill Holmberg is the resident biofuels expert at the American Council for Renewable Energy. He’s also a former U.S. Marine who has dedicated much of his professional life to furthering the cause of renewable energy. In this week’s podcast, Mr. Holmberg discusses the present viability and the future marketability of biofuels in the U.S.

“Inside Renewable Energy” offers the latest in renewable energy news.

Inside Renewable Energy - July 20, 2006

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

The Solar America Initiative (SAI) is a broad national program designed to encourage competition throughout the solar industry by lowering the cost of photovoltaic units and fostering innovation of new technologies. In June, President Bush announced an increase in funding for the SAI, raising the yearly budget from $80 million to $148 million. The Department of Energy (DOE) says that an emphasis on funding industry partnerships to promote market-ready PV and the elimination of manufacturing and production R&D barriers will accelerate the solar industry. In this week’s edition of “Inside Renewable Energy,” DOE Program Manager Steven Chalk and SAI Program Manager Craig Cornelius will be talking about how the funds will be allocated and where the program will go in the future. Also on the podcast: California State Senator Kevin Murray gives us an update on SB1, the long awaited $3.35 billion solar bill that finally passed the California Assembly in June. It’s been over two years since the legislation was introduced, but Senator Murray is confident that the bill will make it to the Governor’s desk by the end of the summer. Listen in to find out what the passage of SB1 will mean for the solar industry in California and the rest of the country.

Inside Renewable Energy - July 13, 2006

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Many towns and communities realize the importance of transitioning to some form of renewable energy in the coming years. The question is, what form? In this week’s edition of “Inside Renewable Energy,” Duncan Watson, Assistant Director of Public Works for Keene, NH, talks about the confusing task of figuring out which form of renewable energy to adopt. Due to robust local resources, Watson is leaning toward wind power, but the longstanding opposition to commercial wind turbines among some New Englanders may be a make-or-break consideration. Watson is undertaking a careful review of the town’s options and researching other towns’ renewable energy systems to determine what makes the most sense for Keene.

We’ll hear from RE Insider Scott Sklar in this week’s podcast. Sklar contrasts the unregulated freedom of the U.S. energy market with the more state-controlled markets of Europe and Asia and discusses the implications for the future of U.S. energy. Sklar also analyzes the U.S. nuclear power industry, which is reportedly in the midst of a “renaissance.” With the oil economy under increasing duress, the nuclear power industry has become more visible and has strengthened its lobbying presence in Washington, says Sklar. Safety concerns, however, will likely continue to hamper investment and expansion.
