The TH Interview: Wangari Maathai (Part Two)

Friday, May 30th, 2008

wangari-maathai-treehugger.jpg

“How can the planting of trees threaten presidents and ministers and people in authority? It’s not the act of planting trees, it is the act of exposing the injustices…that people in office carry out.” Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai empowers people around the world through the simple act of putting roots into soil. But she has been beaten, tear-gassed and imprisoned for her work. Telling truth to power is also the reason she recently declined the honor of being an Olympic torch bearer. In the second part of our in-depth interview, Dr. Maathai also tells TreeHugger how she greens up her own remarkable life. ::TreeHugger Radio

Your Green Life Minute - Sustainable Wood

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Making the connection between deforestation and global warming isn’t hard. Scientists estimate that the clearing of the earth’s forests accounts for close to 20 percent of the carbon emissions going into our atmosphere. With much of that deforestation tied to the growing trade in illegally logged lumber, environmental experts say consumers can ensure they aren’t supporting illegally logged lumber by buying sustainable wood.

Eco-labels like the one the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) uses, guarantee consumers that the wood they’re buying has come from a forest that’s been logged in an ecologically responsible way. That guarantee is based on a transparent tracking system that traces wood to its source and identifies how it was harvested.

Your Green Life Minute - Turn On The Tap

Friday, May 30th, 2008

When it comes to choosing drinking water, more and more people are turning on the tap instead of buying it in plastic water bottles. Besides being a whole lot cheaper, most tap water rates just as high in terms of quality and purity, especially in the Bay Area.

That’s because large cities face strict water quality testing requirements from the Environmental Protection Agency, while bottled water isn’t as rigorously regulated. So why not turn on the tap, cut your waste and save money?

Your Green Life Minute - Slow The Flow: Junk Mail

Friday, May 30th, 2008

An estimated 100 million trees are needed to create the 100 billion pieces of junk mail delivered to U.S. mailboxes every year. Much of those credit card offers, catalogs and coupon packs are unwanted. But now there’s a growing effort to reduce this enormous waste and offer consumers more tools to slow the flow. It’s an online petition aimed at getting lawmakers to create a junk mail version of the national Do Not Call list.

Teenie Weenie Greenieâ

Eau de Peewww! Has a skunk decided to move in a little to close your home? This week’s Teenie Weenie Greenieâ is to give your
unwelcome (and stinky) neighbor an eviction notice and get rid of some old perfume at the same time. Not surprisingly, skunks generally
avoid perfume. Cut the foot and ankle off an old nylon stocking. Take some scrap yarn, douse it in the old perfume, and tuck it
inside the foot of the stocking you just cut. Tie the top in a knot and stash any place you want discourage skunks.

May 29, 2008 - Inside Renewable Energy - Verifying Efficiency Claims for Organic PV; Renewable Heating and Cooling in Europe

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Organic PV has made a lot of headway in recent years as efficiency levels have climbed higher and higher, grabbing the attention of researchers and investors. However, some reported efficiencies of organic PV cells are being disputed because of inconsistent and unverified testing.

We’ll speak with Journalist and Author Peter Fairley about his latest story called, “Solar Cell Squabble,” which outlines the debate over how organic PV should be tested and its implications for the health of the industry.

Also in the podcast: Part two of our look at renewable heating and cooling (REHC) policies. We’ll talk to Veit Buerger, a research fellow for the Energy and Climate Division at the Institute for Applied Ecology, about German promotion policies and the need for Europe to more aggressively develop a robust REHC sector.

Inside Renewable Energy offers the latest in renewable energy news and information.

Commercial Composting: Why One Restaurant Recycles

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Saving the planet may well stem from the small act of many, than bigger actions undergone by the few. One restaurant chooses to participate in a city-wide program, recycling its food waste into reusable garden compost—the owner explains why.
