We Make the Road by Walking - White Oak Farm CSA
Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Peak Moment 111: Amidst cob-wall plastering in the background, co-director Stacey Denton relates the story of the first years at White Oak Farm and Educational Center in Oregon: Acquiring the 62 acres of food and pasture and protecting it through conservation easements, and creating a non-profit organization. See food baskets for their CSA (community supported agriculture) program, visit their abundant permaculture-based farm; attend a workshop in natural building; and delight with kids in an educational program “down on the farm.” [www.whiteoakfarmcsa.org]

Advice to Parents and Teens - Preparing for Peak Oil
Monday, May 26th, 2008

Peak Moment 110: As a mom of two teenagers, Deborah Lindsay is deeply concerned about their future. As a peak oil educator, she paints a vivid picture of a post-petroleum world, with an emphasis on preparedness. With teens she talks about career choices and practical life skills. With parents, she focuses on safety, economic and energy contraction, and steps to begin now. In 2006 she began the daily talk radio show “Tomorrow Matters - Giving a Voice to a Better Tomorrow” to amplify her message. [www.deborahlindsay.com]

First Women’s Meeting at the 21st of September Co-op
Monday, May 26th, 2008

This update from Sustainable Harvest at Origin in Mexico provides an inside look at the women farmers from the 21st of September coffee cooperative in Oaxaca, Mexico. The women are organizing themselves into a formal women’s group to manage productive community projects, help organize and sell lots of coffee produced by the 400 women member farmers, and generally promote women’s participation at all levels of the cooperative.
Sustainable Harvest has been working with the 21st of September cooperative since 2006. In 2005, the co-op farmers separated from the larger state-level coffee cooperative in search of better specialty market access and higher quality in their coffee and their organization. Sustainable Harvest partners with the 21st of September to help them improve their organizational capacity, production and post-harvest processing, quality control, certifications, financing, and logistics and export. Through Sustainable Harvest’s Relationship Coffee model, the cooperative has increased its access to specialty markets, improved the quality of its coffee, and built direct relationships with North American coffee roasters.

The TH Interview: Wangari Maathai (Part One)
Friday, May 23rd, 2008
Yes, Wangari Maathai, the founder of the Green Belt Movement, was the first to receive a Nobel Peace Prize for environmental work. But as she makes ever-so-clear, trees are not just ecological super heroes. They form a bridge to women’s rights, sustainable development, democracy, and (yes, indeed) world peace. Sound like a stretch? Coming from Dr. Maathai it all makes sense. ::TreeHugger Radio
