More Hip Than Hippie - Ladies Who Lunch
Tuesday, August 5th, 2008There’s no such thing as a free lunch, unless you’re talking waste-free! The Hipsters chat with two ladies who are on a mission to dispose of the disposables in our lunchboxes. Amy Hemmert and Tammy Pelstring share easy ideas to cut the waste while saving money and time.
Beer and Chocolate:
Beer: Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville Brewing Company in Jacksonville, Florida serves up Landshark Island-style Lager. We pay tribute with the appropriate SNL clip at the end of the show. Candygram!
Chocolate: The last of listener Maile’s J. D. Gross Ecuador Edelcacao from Germany, this one with raspberries. Val still says Edel-caca.
Hip News and Finds

- Do they eat green eggs and ham? Apparently real humans work at the Environmental Protection Agency. And they blog. Join the Greenversation.

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008More Hip Than Hippie #164 - That’s Sew Green!

Beer and Chocolate:
Beer: Mendocino Brewing Company’s Summer Seasonal White Ale. It’s a limited edition, so try to get some before Dori and Val drink it all up.
Chocolate: J. D. Gross Ecuador Edelcacao, once again from our new favorite listener, Maile in Germany. We think it has ginger in it; could someone please translate the label? (D’oh, turns out it was caramel!)

- Adios to irrigation. Say hola to the olla! Bury these unglazed pots neck-deep near your plants and let the water seep out naturally. Save your pesos and make your own. Muy bien!

- Watt? Another one? A new electric car is unveiled in Israel by Renault and Project Better Place. Forget the plug, we’ll need a power strip!
Teenie Weenie Greenieâ
Love the Swiffer, hate the waste! That’s why listener Jamielee’s ideas for "greening" it up are so brilliant. First, bypass the chemicals with a vinegar solution. Then, use an old cloth diaper as a washable pad in the wetjet, or cut up a fleece sweatshirt for the vac. Finally, compost the filter muck. Use rechargeable batteries to keep it running green. Swifferific!
That’s Sew Green!
Do you have the itch to stitch? Even a novice (Dori) or a neurotic (Val) can save an old garment or give it some new style. Trystan Bass from Yahoo! Green needles the Hipsters to start sewing! From the basics of sewing a button, to shopping for a machine, Trystan talks tailoring (and reveals her husband’s porn star name).
- Sew green, save green, look fab. That’s the name of Trystan’s article that inspired this topic. No, that’s not her in the picture. We asked.
- Does the feed dog bite? Let a pro tell you what to look for in a sewing machine.
- Look what I made! Flaunt photos of your work on the Wardrobe Refashion community’s blog.

- Who wears the pants? Doug’s wife is on him to get some pants for work, but he can’t go cotton. We hope this helps. Happy shopping!
- This breaks the CamelBak. Now a new plastic is on the market, claiming to be BPA-free. Ines wants to know if it’s safe to try water bottles made with Tritan. We say, more research please!
- What did you call us? Steve from NJ suggests a delighful cocktail of raspberry beer and Hoegaarden ale. We’d tell you what it’s called, but we’re nice girls. ROFL!

from Baltimore! Congratulations Molly, and thanks to all who entered! - Treehuggers unite! DateforTrees.com is on online dating service that hooks you up
with like-minded people AND donates a tree to American Forests for each month you are a
paid member of their service. You can sign up for free and see if it’s right for you before
upgrading to a paid membership. - The results are in. Oprah has concluded her 21-day vegan cleansing process. During the 3
weeks, with the exception of olive oil, all the food she ate was grown in her garden.
Hip News:
- White House still withholding. The White House is drying to block the U.S. EPA
from releasing a document that shows how the Clean Air Act could be used to regulate greenhouse gases. - The Bush Legacy. A new initiative will ask San Francisco voters to change the
name of a prize-winning water treatment plant to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant. Now that’s what we
call good, old fashioned bathroom humor!
Teenie Weenie Greenie™
Sticking with the topic of this episode, this week’s Teenie Weenie Greenie™ is to try an Organic Beer (if you are of legal drinking age, of course). If you’re too young to drink beer, or just don’t like beer (gasp!) try an organic juice.

- Locally Known. Sydney sent along an article about a company called Locally Known. It’s a farm company in Maine with
a goal of providing New England fresh greens. - Composting made easy. Tyus is trying to convince his mom to start composting, but she’s worried about not
having enough space and the smell. If you have enough room outdoors, an Envirocycle Composter is great. For indoor composting and
small spaces, try an odor-free automatic composter, like the NatureMill Plus or
NatureMill Pro. - Plant peril. Brian sent in a couple links about how global warming is affecting plants and how the
Ozone is bad for plants. He also wanted
everyone to check out Farm Fountains, sculptural ecosystems you can eat. - Organic Brew Robert tried his first organic beer recently, Stone Mill pale ale.
- Hipster Welcome! We wanted to welcome new listener Rob, who discovered More Hip Than Hippie while on CleanMPG.com.
- Free fun in DC. Cassi is planning to take advantage of the free bike tours offered by the National Park
Service on her next trip to Washington DC. - Litter box solutions. Hilary has discovered a less wasteful option for her
cat’s litter box. She uses aquarium gravel with a sifting litter box. The idea is to
pick up the sifter with the litter, pour the cat urine down the drain, put the poo in the trash, and then wash and rinse the aquarium
gravel. - Homemade freezer chocolate. Give Hilary’s homemade freezer chocolate recipe a try:
- Heat 1 cup of coconut oil, Agave syrup till sweetened, and 1 cup of cacao powder.
- Chop 1 cup almonds and 1/2 cup candied ginger.
- Mix the almonds and ginger on some wax paper on a cookie sheet.
- Pour the chocolate mixture over it and make sure all of the almonds and ginger are
coated. - Freeze until hard, cut into bite sized pieces and store in the freezer.
