First Women’s Meeting at the 21st of September Co-op

Monday, May 26th, 2008

This update from Sustainable Harvest at Origin in Mexico provides an inside look at the women farmers from the 21st of September coffee cooperative in Oaxaca, Mexico. The women are organizing themselves into a formal women’s group to manage productive community projects, help organize and sell lots of coffee produced by the 400 women member farmers, and generally promote women’s participation at all levels of the cooperative.

Sustainable Harvest has been working with the 21st of September cooperative since 2006. In 2005, the co-op farmers separated from the larger state-level coffee cooperative in search of better specialty market access and higher quality in their coffee and their organization. Sustainable Harvest partners with the 21st of September to help them improve their organizational capacity, production and post-harvest processing, quality control, certifications, financing, and logistics and export. Through Sustainable Harvest’s Relationship Coffee model, the cooperative has increased its access to specialty markets, improved the quality of its coffee, and built direct relationships with North American coffee roasters.
